The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) serves as a focal point in advocating, promoting and coordinating support to South-South and triangular cooperation (SSC and TrC) at the global and UN system level.
To better leverage advantages in the application of South-South cooperation as means to implement the 2030 Agenda, the UNOSSC Strategic Framework (2018-21) has highlighted the need for strengthening its regional offices to respond to the multifaceted needs of developing countries.
The Second UN High-level Conference on South-South Cooperation (BAPA+40, 2019) outcome document further calls for United Nations system to continue its support to regional and sub-regional organizations, recognizing the role of the United Nations Regional Commissions in supporting South-South and triangular cooperation initiatives, in accordance with their respective mandates, and bearing in mind the ongoing United Nations Development System reform.
In this context, through its regional offices, UNOSSC will
- Identify, document and share knowledge among sub-regional and regional institutions, including economic groupings, on South-South policies and programmes that have proven effective in strengthening regional integration via the South-South provision of public goods and services; Support innovative platforms that foster SSC and TrC in collaboration with national governments, regional commissions, UNDP, and other United Nations entities as well as civil society, academia and the private sector;
- Facilitate the integration of South-South cooperation approaches into United Nations operational activities of cross-border and inter-regional programmes, through strengthened support to regional commissions and the United Nations resident coordinator system;
- Support capacity development of regional and sub-regional mechanisms in better managing SSC and TrC for impact-at-scale for the achievement of the sustainable development goals.
The UNOSSC is currently recruiting candidates for the role of Regional Chief, Division for Arab States, Europe & the Common Independent States. The Chief for the UNOSSC regional office in Arab States, Europe, and CIS will be responsible for supporting SSC and TrC initiatives in the two regions, in line with the UNOSSC’s Strategic Framework and the BAPA+40 outcome documents. He/She reports directly to the Deputy Director on Programmes and Operations, under overall guidance of the Director.
