South-South Galaxy Thematic Repository on Disaster Risk Reduction and Disaster Management

The frequency and impact of natural and man-made disasters have been increasing steadily in recent decades in many countries around the world. As exemplified by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, poverty, inadequate infrastructure and preparedness, or simple geographic characteristics mean that communities in the Global South are often even more vulnerable to the worst of those effects. Climate change has come to exacerbate these vulnerabilities.

South-South Galaxy stems from a belief that knowledge is key when it comes to resolving some of the world’s most pressing issues. And that the sharing of that knowledge can serve as a powerful tool when it comes to fighting poverty and inequality, improving access to health, education and opportunities, and ensuring the collective objectives expressed by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be achieved.

When it comes to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Disaster Management (DM), knowledge sharing and lesson learning can serve reduce risks related to future disasters by facilitating well-informed mitigation and preparedness planning. Therefore, ensuring the availability and accessibility of accurate and reliable information requires an efficient system for knowledge sharing.

With this objective in mind, South-South Galaxy is making knowledge, information and lessons learned from DRR and DM practitioners, governments and other development actors easily available, in order to reduce the information gap, thus improving preparedness, and mitigation efforts. The platform features several Good Practices on disaster risk reduction, management and mitigation, and on the response to the COVID-19 crisis. Several knowledge products produced by UNOSSC and our partners are also available, as well as a number of news articles, events and other materials that can be of assistance to practitioners on the ground. This database will keep expanding.
